Often thought of as a condition for teens, many continue to experience acne into their twenties and thirties. For some acne suffering adults their problems did not start until they reached the twenties. Adult acne can be caused by one or more combinations of the following conditions.

Stress related acne was a myth until recent times. The relationship between stress and acne has begun to be understood by research. For adults experiencing acne, stress is now believed to be the main cause of breakouts of acne.

The brain triggers the central nervous system when the person is exposed to stress situations, and this sends signals to the rest of the body, sort of a primitive fight or flight type response. The response is in part due to hormonal release originating in the adrenal glands and also fatty secretions from the sebaceous glands that lay beneath the skin. The pores are clogged by hormonal imbalance and fatty secretions, both contributing to acne problems.

Adult women are primarily affected by hormonal imbalance that causes acne. During pregnancy or a woman’s menstrual cycle, imbalances can cause acne to occur. Some adult males also report having monthly acne outbreaks. It is believed they may also have hormonal cycles similar to women, even though they don’t menstruate.

Also, adults have a tendency to drink more coffee than teenagers. A stress hormone, cortisol, is produced more by the caffeine in coffee and tea drinking. And hormone imbalances are know to be contributing to acne in adults.

Cigarette smoking introduces chemicals into the body which limit blood circulation. The blood that is needed by skin cells to help them to heal and regenerate. Smoke from cigarettes also releases toxins that can clog skin pores and even promote the growth of bacteria. This also contributes to acne in adults.

According to research in recent times, people who have a family history of acne also are more likely to suffer from this problem.

Jobs that have high levels of pollution, irritants, or humidity, in the environment also can lead to increased adult acne. Greasy and heavy cosmetics trap bacteria, dirt, and oils. This also sometimes results in acne breakouts in adults. Makeup coverings of the skin can make acne cases worse.
